Signs of Narcissistic Abuse: Recognizing What “Normal” Isn’t and How to Heal

Common Signs of Narcissistic Abuse

1. Walking on Eggshells. If you feel like you must carefully monitor your words and actions to avoid anger or criticism, you’re experiencing a red flag. Healthy relationships allow for open communication without fear.


2. Feeling Responsible for Their Emotions. You might feel like it’s your job to fix their mood, apologize for things you didn’t do, or protect them from discomfort. In truth, everyone is responsible for their own feelings. You are not meant to carry another adult's emotional weight.


3. Loving Too Hard. Many survivors give endlessly, hoping that love and attention will be reciprocated. Real love is mutual and does not require self-erasure or constant proving of worth.


4. Gaslighting and Self-Doubt. Gaslighting makes you question your memory, perceptions, or feelings. Feeling confused, anxious, or insecure isn’t your fault — it’s a form of manipulation meant to control you.


5. Isolation and Love Bombing. Being discouraged from seeing friends or family, or receiving intense, inconsistent affection, are warning signs. Healthy relationships encourage connection, support, and consistency.


6. Constantly Changing Rules. If expectations constantly shift and nothing feels like it’s ever enough, it can leave you feeling like you can never “win.” In healthy relationships, boundaries and expectations are clear and consistent.


7. Leaving Feels Impossible. You may feel trapped, thinking that leaving means failure. Walking away from abuse is not weakness — it’s courage. Every survivor has the right to reclaim their freedom and peace.
